How to Open EPUB Files
EPUB is the most widely supported ebook format, but it doesn't open natively on every device. Here's how to read EPUB files on any platform.
Windows
Windows doesn't include a built-in EPUB reader. Your best options:
- Microsoft Edge — just drag and drop an EPUB file into Edge. It has a built-in reader.
- Calibre — free desktop app with a full ebook library manager. Compare Calibre vs Epublys.
- Sumatra PDF — lightweight free reader that supports EPUB, PDF, and MOBI.
Mac
Apple Books (pre-installed) opens EPUB files natively. Just double-click the file. You can also use Calibre for library management.
iPhone & iPad
Apple Books is pre-installed and handles EPUB perfectly. Open the file from Mail, Files, or Safari and choose "Open in Books."
Android
- Google Play Books — upload your EPUB at play.google.com/books, then read on any Android device.
- ReadEra — free offline reader, no account required.
- Moon+ Reader — popular reader with customization options.
Kindle
Kindle doesn't open EPUB directly, but you can send EPUBs via email and Amazon converts them automatically. See our EPUB to Kindle guide.
Online (Browser)
For a quick look without installing anything, you can use Epublys to validate or convert your EPUB to PDF for viewing in any browser.
