Windows

No built-in EPUB support since Microsoft removed it from Edge in 2019. Three good options:

  • Sumatra PDF — under 10MB install, opens instantly, handles EPUB/PDF/MOBI/CBZ. The right pick if you just want to read without a full application.
  • Thorium Reader — built specifically for EPUB 3 by the EDRLab consortium. Better support for accessibility features and audio overlays than Sumatra. Free and open source.
  • Calibre — full library manager plus a capable viewer. Worth the 200MB download if you have a collection and need format conversion too. See Calibre vs Epublys.

Mac

Apple Books is pre-installed and works well. Double-click an EPUB and it opens directly, gets added to your library, and syncs to iPhone/iPad over iCloud. Supports font customization, night mode, highlights, and bookmarks. Add Calibre if you need library management or format conversion beyond what Books offers.

iPhone and iPad

Apple Books handles this cleanly — tap an EPUB attachment in Mail, Files, or Safari, select "Open in Books," and it's in your library with iCloud sync across all your Apple devices. If you want more control over fonts and reading preferences, KyBook 3 is a capable free alternative with OPDS catalog support.

Android

No built-in reader. Two solid free options:

  • ReadEra — no ads, no account required, works offline. Supports EPUB, PDF, MOBI, FB2, and more. The easiest choice.
  • Google Play Books — upload EPUBs at play.google.com/books and they sync to all your Android devices. Best for cloud backup and cross-device reading. Built-in dictionary and highlights.

Kindle

Kindle doesn't open EPUB files from USB. Since 2022, Amazon accepts EPUB via email:

  1. Go to Amazon → Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings
  2. Note your @kindle.com address and add your sending address to the approved list
  3. Email the EPUB as an attachment to your Kindle address — the book arrives in a few minutes over Wi-Fi

Linux

  • Foliate — minimal GNOME reader, fast startup, annotations support. Install via Flatpak or your distro's repos.
  • Calibre — available via apt, dnf, or snap. Best when you need library management alongside reading.
  • Okular — KDE's multi-format viewer. Good if you're on KDE and want one app for EPUB, PDF, DJVU, and MOBI.

Browser — No Install

The Epublys online reader lets you upload and read any EPUB in your browser with no account required. Alternatively, convert to PDF first to use your browser's native PDF viewer.
