Frequently asked questions

How are chapters decided?
By default a new chapter starts at every heading of the highest level your document uses — Heading 1 in a normal manuscript. If your chapters are separated by page breaks instead, choose "Page breaks"; choose "Single chapter" for a short document. A Title-styled paragraph becomes the book title, not a chapter.
What formatting survives the conversion?
Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, super- and subscript, bulleted and numbered lists (including nesting), tables, block quotes, line and page breaks, web links, inline pictures (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP) and footnotes. Text boxes, floating shapes, tracked changes and comments are not converted — accept your changes and remove comments in Word first.
Where do the title and author come from?
From the fields you fill in here; otherwise from the document's own properties (File → Info in Word), then from a Title-styled paragraph, then from the first heading. You can change any of it afterwards with the metadata editor.
Do I need Word, Calibre or Pandoc?
No. The conversion runs on our servers from the .docx file alone, in memory, and the file is discarded the moment your EPUB is returned. Legacy .doc files are not accepted — save as .docx first.
What is the file size limit?
Free users can convert documents up to 5MB, which covers most manuscripts with a few pictures. Pro raises the ceiling to 30MB per operation for heavily illustrated books.
